History: Rube Foster was one of black baseball's towering figures, as a player, manager, team owner, and league organizer. 1919 was the American Giants' last year as an independent team. Foster started the first Negro National League the following season.

History: Although Rube Foster's Negro National League in 1920 is generally considered the first organized Black league, an earlier attempt was made with the oddly-named National Association of Colored Baseball Clubs of the United States and Cuba, of which the Royal Giants were a charter member in 1907. The Royal Giants won the title of the four-team league in 1908 and 1909.

History: Before the formation of the first Negro National League in 1920, black baseball consisted primarily of independent clubs who created their own schedules and barnstormed. Giants was a common early name for many Negro league teams because of the popularity of John McGraw's New York Giants, baseball's dominant team in the early 20th Century. The St. Louis Giants later became the Stars, and were a charter member of the NNL.
